Should You Hire a Marketing Agency or Do It Yourself? An Honest Answer
First, the honest answer
Most people asking this question have hit the same wall. The referrals and word of mouth that built your business have flattened out, and now you need a way to go and find customers online. That is a completely different skill. Doing great work and getting recommended is one thing. Buying attention from strangers and turning it into paying customers is another.
So here is the honest answer before we go any further. If you are a data-driven person who enjoys the fine detail, who wants to be particular about every step of setting up and running a Google Ads account, you can absolutely do this yourself. If you would rather hand that responsibility over to people who do it every day, an agency will more than likely get you more leads, faster. The rest of this post is about helping you work out which one you are.
Why you are even asking this question
Referral leads are brilliant, but they have a ceiling. They come in when they come in, you cannot turn them up when you need a busier month, and eventually the people in your circle run out. When that happens, most business owners start looking at Google Ads or social ads as the next step, because that is where you can actually choose to go and find more of the right customers.
The problem is that the platforms make it look easy, and it is not. Choosing what to target, who to target, and how to measure whether it worked is where businesses either grow or quietly waste a lot of money.
Where doing it yourself usually goes wrong
When business owners set up their own ads, most end up clicking whatever the advertising platform recommends. Those AI suggestions feel safe because they come from Google or Meta themselves, but in most cases they quietly waste money. They are built to spend your budget, not to protect it.
The bigger problem is measurement. Accounts often end up counting the wrong things as conversions, so you think something is working when it is not.
We are auditing a Google Ads account right now for a local engine parts company. Their own marketing person set it up, and it does bring in leads, but a lot of them are time wasters. When our marketing lead went through it, his exact words were "everything is wrong." The account was doubling up on what Google counted as a conversion, which meant the client was being charged more money to measure his own success incorrectly. He was paying a premium to be misled by his own data.
That is the thing about doing it yourself. You do not know what you do not know, and the platform will happily keep taking your money while you find out.
Where bad agencies go wrong too
To be fair, hiring an agency is no guarantee either. Plenty of them skip the groundwork. They do not take the time to do proper competitor analysis, they promise quick wins straight away, and they throw money at keywords and phrases that never convert into real paying customers.
We take a different line. We tell clients that within two to three months you should start to see conversions coming through from proper, qualified leads, the kind of customers you are actually trying to reach. That is slower than an overnight promise, but it is real, and it is built on targeting the right people from the start rather than spending first and hoping.
If an agency promises you instant results before it has looked at your market, treat that as a warning sign, not a selling point.
What it costs, and why nobody can give you one number
People always want a figure, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on your industry and your niche. Choosing what to target and who to target is where the real value sits.
Picture a local grocery shop that wants to advertise but ends up competing for the same searches as Tesco. It has no chance, and any budget aimed there would disappear. That same budget pointed at the right, winnable searches could do very well.
That is why there is no single price. It varies completely from client to client, and anyone who quotes you a flat number before looking at your market is guessing.
What an agency gives you that you cannot do alone
The biggest advantage is not a tool or a trick. It is breadth.
We work with multiple companies across very different industries, so we learn from all of them. A tactic that works for a retailer can inform how we run a recruitment campaign. When you run your own account, you only ever see your own data. We see dozens of accounts, and that pattern recognition is very hard to build on your own.
A few examples from our own clients
An accountancy firm that was stuck relying on referrals and word of mouth now has a steady way to bring in new clients online.
A tool and hardware retailer that sold mainly in store is now thriving online nationwide, delivering a 90 times return from its campaigns and more than 12 million impressions across Ireland.
Biological and lab companies that constantly need to hire use ads not to sell, but to recruit, keeping a steady pipeline of quality candidates coming in. One biological client saved more than €1.2 million in recruitment fees through LinkedIn campaigns.
How to tell a good agency from a cowboy
If you do decide to shop around, the signs of a good agency are simple:
It wants to understand your competitors and your market before it spends a cent.
It gives you an honest timeline rather than promising instant results.
It is straight with you about what is and is not working in what you already have.
