AI Search in 2026: How Irish Businesses Stay Visible

Search is changing faster than it has in years. At its I/O 2026 event in May, Google called its new search box the biggest upgrade in over 25 years — and the direction is unmistakable: search is becoming AI-first. Here's what that means for your business, in plain English.

What Google announced at I/O 2026

Google is putting AI at the centre of Search. A few of the headline changes:

  • AI Mode, which now has more than a billion monthly users, gets a more powerful default model and a reimagined, conversational search box.

  • You can ask a follow-up question straight from an AI Overview and flow into a back-and-forth, with the supporting links becoming more relevant as you go.

  • New 'search agents' can monitor the web in the background and even help with booking tasks like local services.

  • Search can now build custom interactive tools and dashboards on the fly for more involved tasks.

The short version: more and more answers are being assembled by AI directly on the results page, with links and sources woven in.

What this means for your visibility

When AI summarises an answer, it still draws on real web pages — and it cites sources. So the goal is shifting from simply 'ranking' towards becoming the trusted source the AI pulls from and points people to. For some quick informational questions, fewer people may click through; but for anything where someone wants a provider, a product or local help, being the clearly-cited, credible source matters more than ever.

How Irish businesses can stay visible

  • Answer real questions clearly. Structure pages so the key answer is easy to find — clear headings, direct answers, and a sensible FAQ where it fits.

  • Make your expertise obvious. Show who you are, your experience and real results. Genuine, first-hand expertise is exactly what both classic search and AI reward.

  • Strengthen local signals. Keep your Google Business Profile accurate, with consistent name, address and phone details, and build genuinely useful local pages.

  • Get the fundamentals right. Fast, accessible, well-structured pages with content in clean HTML help both Google and AI tools read and use your site.

The fundamentals haven't changed

It's easy to feel you need to chase every new AI feature. But the foundation is the same as it's always been — and it's the same advice Google gives for its core updates: create helpful, reliable, people-first content. Do that well and you're in a strong position whether someone finds you through a classic blue link or an AI-generated answer.
